Is this just a burner or can I use it to play dvds and cds ? I want to add it to my Dell desktop computer.

I have only used it to install software on a laptop that did not come with a read/write.  I have not used the burner but I used it to read both CD and DVD formats.  Based on this, I would assume that since it reads DVD's and CD's that it will play the content if the format of the file dictates it.

There is no hardware restriction regarding where the music file will go.  It is a CD Read Write.  It will read your music CD based on whatever software you may use to do that.  You could then place it on your hard drive.  I am not familiar with the software that creates iTunes or places your music file onto an iPhone device but that software would read the file from your hard drive.

You may even have software that reads this CD and places the music file directly on you iTunes device.

I have no idea if this is MAC compatible. However, this device is standard hardware that runs on USB. If you find another external DVD device that is MAC compatible, odds are they all are.

Also, if you visit a local MAC store at any mal.. just ask them if any standard USB DVD player will run on MAC.

My guess is yes... but I do NOT work on MAC ... I am a loyal PC person and I stay clear of MAC.

It is.  I've used it with contemporary iMacs, Mac Book Pros and Mac Minis which also lack an on-baord DVD drive.

This drive is ready to work with windows or Mac, no formatting required, so if thats your concern, yes. If you no longer can view dvds because of mac software issues, I suggest you fix that problem first. good luck

Yes. Any relatively new USB-2 or higher DVD player will be automatically compatible (plug n play ready) with Win Vista,Win 7 and Win 8.

It does work on Linux. Which Chrome OS is built from Linux. So as long as Chrome OS USB functionality is there, and it detects other removable media. I imagine it would detect this.
