Do you think this optical drive compatible with win8 or win10???

It's compatible with any Operating System that can use an optical drive...which would pretty much be (almost) any version of Windows, Apple OS, Linux, and probably more.
It plugs into the USB port, and the software (whatever it is) sees it as a CD/DVD drive connected to the computer. No driver installation is necessary (on any modern OS, newer than Windows 98).

Question 2

do i need drivers for iMac to run this drive?

I don't think so.

I bought this a couple of months ago to use with my MacBook as a second drive, set to handle region 2 DVDs. (I have a drive on which I play region 1, but I didn't want to mess with the limitations on shifting regions.)

I use VLC software as a player, but when I initially plugged in the drive it was recognized by the OS, and I likely could have proceeded just plug-and-play.

By the way, it is small and lightweight and I'm very pleased with it.

Will i be able to use it to install my OS on a new build?

I was able to install on a new build with this, but situations vary and I can't definitively say "Yes, this WILL WORK for you in that exact situation!"

But I was able to do it, so yes it should work for you.

Question 4

can this dvd burner be used with both mac and windows systems?

Windows: Yes.
MacOS: Never tried it, but I'm 99% sure it will work just fine; if the computer has a PPC processor (2006 and below), then no.

Most modern operating systems should have built-in support for external media readers/burners.

Question 5

Stupid question, but can this read Blu Ray discs or just write to them? I'm thinking of getting a cheap external reader.

Hi,
This drive is DVD compatible only. This means that there is no support for blu-ray. It does support CD's in addition to DVD; unfortunately that is it's limit. If you search specfically for blu-ray players/burners, then you will find what you are looking for. Additionally, any "burner" also has reading capabilities (just to clarify).

I bought this to be a reader and burner drive but it seams to not want to read a DVD at all. It shows the DVD but wont play it. Is this just a burner or both?

It is a DVD compatible read/burn drive, my first thought is maybe the program/codecs you have installed are making it difficult.    Try downloading VLC and then try it again

What is meant by 3.0 Compatible?  Does it mean it will work with a 3.0 USB port or that if I change out the 2.0 with a 3.0 cable it will work at 3.0 speed?

Master T,

USB 3.0 'compatible' means that it's actually a USB 2.0 connection.  However, by design, USB 2.0 is compatible with USB 3.0 ports.

When using a 2.0 connection in a 3.0 port, you will only get the slower 2.0 data transfer speed.  Even with the slower speed, I've not had any problems with lag in the reproduction of stuff from the discs.

I've been using this unit for several months now and it's a totally reliable and easy-to-use unit.

Yes, this drive will work with the surface pro.  Just plug it in and the drivers will load automatically.
