Do I require a separate sound system with this TV?

No, there are built-in speakers, but the sound is as you might expect. If you want excellent sound, you would have to have a custom system.

About the feet, I have a 3' wide triangular shelf I want to set this on. How wide are the feet themselves, and can the feet point inward rather than the way they are shown? Concerned that the front of the feet won't be setting on the shelf.

The feet run 28" from outside edge to outside edge, and are just shy of being 6" deep.  They are not reversible.

So, brushing off my trig skills, setting this TV as far back into the stand as you can means the front of the feet would be off the shell by an inch or so.

Doesn't look like it would work well.

can a coax cable attach to it?  It looks like there is something on the side for it, but can't tell for sure.

Yes it has hookups for Coax and HDMI. It has USB port but cannot use USB for video. At least I have not been able to figure it out if it does.

No it doesn't (if so I haven't tried). I'm sure you could get a custom or wall mount if you need it to. It's light enough to lift and turn without hassle though.
