Do you need to format this SD card before transferring photos on it? Also, do you have to unmount if you have to remove it to view it on a full size card reader with the adapter? Thank for any replies.

Your questions leave a lot of different avenues to go down to answer.  They can be answered as both Yes and No regarding formatting.  If you are referring to formatting in order for your phone to accept/use it and copy photos onto it - well that may depend on your phone.  I have used mine in formats exFat, NTFS, and even forced it to fat32 with no problems.   Your phone "should" either accept it or at the least ask you if you want to format it.   If you are talking about the format for a standalone computer to transfer files to/from, it may depend on how old a computer you are using but anything within the last five years should have no problems using it.  The "Required" format is completely controlled by the device you are using it in.  Some devices may allow more than one type of format.  My phones allow either NTFS or exFat.   One of my cameras only allows Fat32, while another allows Fat32 or NTFS.

If you are the kind of person who does NOT "unmount" a memory card when you remove it,  well I hope you are at least smart enough to turn your phone off before removing/inserting a card.  If not then you will eventually be one of those people who loses all their data, whines, cries and then blames it on the manufacturer.  So to be safe ALWAYS unmount or turn the device OFF before removing/inserting.
