Pros: I get 14k In 3Dmark06 score with a Phenom at 3GHz. Has GDDR5 memory.

Cons: hot when you don't have control of the fan. To fix problem download ATIexper tool to contorl the fan manually.

Pros: Blazing fast, even w/o overclocking. I max settings on all my games with no hint of lag whatsoever (CoD 4, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., F.E.A.R., don't have Crysis so who knows there) on a 22" LCD widescreen @ 1680 x 1050 resolution.

Cons: runs hot, stays around 74 degrees Celsius while in load, but i don't really have a problem with it at that temperature and have not tried the fan fix.

Overall Review: From what i hear the HD 4870 is made to handle the temperatures so I haven't bothered with trying to speed up the fan. The card was much bigger than i expected, fit kind of tight in my mid tower. I plan to get an Antec 900 or TT armor case soon to help with ventilation and increase air flow, as of now my card sits pretty low to the bottom of my case. Installation was simple. I had already downloaded the ati catalyst hotfix from AMD / ATi website just installed the drivers and set everything up from ATi Catalyst program and have had no problems at all.

Pros: quick upgrade from previous ATI 2600 graphic card. Superb HDMI out to my 42" Regaza 1080p LCDTV with 7.1 sound through the HDMI cable. Using dual display, I have the desktop using monitor 2 1650x1050 and of course I display my movies on monitor 1 in full 1920x1080 resolution. works flawlessly.

Cons: not really a con, but every time I buy something from Newegg, the price continues to decrease, now it is less than 4 days ago when I bought it.

Overall Review: I downloaded the ATItools.exe program at the suggestion of another reviewer and it is great for tweaking this card.(only works on the 4800 series)

Pros: This is the best card I've ever owned in terms of speed. I'm running pretty much everything at 1920x1200 now, this card is incredible.

Cons: What a pain to get this thing to work properly. I came close to RMA'ing it, and I still might. Right out of the box the thing couldn't run almost all 3D games for more than a few minutes without crashing back to windows, or even completely locking up the system. It turns out that you need to make a custom profile in the Catalyst control panel that: 1) Turns up the fan a bit 2) Turns OFF the PowerPlay feature, which is supposed to dynamically adjust the speed of the GPU based on loading. That's really the feature that crashes and burns. Once I did that... I haven't had a single crash with anything I've thrown at it, and I've been trying. It's been amazingly stable.

Overall Review: Grrrr... I'm still a bit miffed that they let something so obvious slip through in the rush to get this thing out to market. Come on people, based on the amount of traffic on the internet forums with people having similar problems, this one should have been an easy catch. Still... I have a hard time rating this below a 4, since I've had no problems ever since I tweaked the profile, and when it works it's so freakin' fast!

Pros: -Quick, runs just about everything I have on full -Dual Slot (hot air gets thrown out the back) -RV770 Core @ 750 -GDDR5 Memory @ 900 (per memory chip, total ~3600?)

Cons: -Lock-ups and random restarts...which I figured out was caused by the 29% defualt fan speed. Fixing it was easy enough...using a beta version of a "Tray Tool" I made my own custom fan profile. -New fan speeds made the card somewhat...audible, not a big deal though

Overall Review: I would say for temps, it idles in the high 50's to low 60's (C). Under load, it goes into the mid 60's (otherwise, I would hear the increase in the fanspeed). If you would purchase an aftermarket cooler or one with a non-ATi release model cooler, you would have less noise and heat. I deducted an egg because of the fan profile messup by ATi...however, I hear the 8.11 Catalyst has basic fan control built in (if I recall correctly)

Pros: I went with Sapphire because they're one of the best vendors for ATI cards.

Cons: Sadly, this card crashed Vista within one minute of running any 3D application. A lot of people on the ATI forums are having issues with HD4870, and almost all of those with problems bought Sapphire. I tried my friend's HD4870 (made by VisionTek) and I had ZERO problems. Returning this card and ordering a VisionTek.

Pros: It's a high-powered, no-holds-barred beast when it's not crashing.

Cons: I can play games on the Sapphire Radeon 4870 for anywhere between 5 minutes and 2 hours before it locks up the display in a checkerboard pattern, forcing a hard reboot. This is on a newly installed copy of WinXP Pro and a 750 watt PSU. From what I understand, the crashes have something to do with how AMD/ATI's power saving feature called PowerPlay is rapidly changing the GPU's core clock speed when using 3D applications (i.e., games). This seems to be a driver issue, and it is fixable with a little tweaking, but to release a product that is essentially broken in terms of its primary purpose (playing ganes) is bad form and insulting to the consumer.

Overall Review: Check out the AMD/ATI forum regarding the crash-prone Sapphire 4870 before you buy, and it may well change your mind. Also, take some advice from me and learn from my mistake. I would have RMAed this card days ago, but Newegg will not accept the return of a product that is missing its serial number from the packaging (even though the serial number is printed on the card itself as well). The first thing I did after receiving the Sapphire 4870 was to clip the serial number and mail it in to get my rebate, only to discover later that this card has serious issues for many people. Don't make the same mistake - either put the scissors down until you're sure the card works to your satisfaction, or better yet, buy a different brand to begin with.
