Please explain what "Optimal storage for NAS and scale-out architectures" means?

Scale-out storage is a network-attached storage (NAS) architecture in which the total amount of disk space can be expanded as needed, even if some of the new drives reside in other storage arrays. If and when a given array reaches its storage limit, another array can be added to expand the system capacity.

Scale-out storage differs conceptually from the older scale-up approach. In a scale-up system, the network storage was confined to a single form factor, while in a scale-out system, new hardware can be added and configured as the need arises. The main advantage of the scale-out approach is cost containment, along with more efficient use of hardware resources.

Before scale-out storage became popular, enterprises often purchased storage arrays much larger than needed, to ensure that plenty of disk space would be available for future expansion. If that expansion never occurred or turned out less than expected, much of the originally purchased disk space went to waste. With the scale-out architecture, the initial investment can be more modest; if the storage requirement expands beyond expectations, new arrays can be added as needed, without limit.

(They did a much better job of explaining it then I ever could...:-)) basically it's a storage system that can grow with the user's needs..

Question 2

Would this drive be ideal on a raid 1 home server, either through Intel firmware raid or Marvell hardware raid or simply overkill?
With the large amount of DOA Red drives this seems like a viable option.
I also have back planes in my Lian-Li case so the non-latch is not a factor.
Not many reviews so I can only assume they are not that popular.

I am using it in my Home Server, so far so good. I plan to have a RAID 6 setup when I finish with my new HS and automation project.

The not so many reviews is because the 6Gb SATA drives are new and motherboards and controller cards are expensive also.

Does anyone know if the full Model number of this drive is WD3000F9YZ-"09N20L0"? I need that specific drive model to work with my WD Sentinel DX4000

Just to clarify, I ordered this. The drive that cam is one digit off. I received a WD3000F9YZ-09N20L1. NOT A WD300F9YZ-09N20L0. So it doesn't work in my WD Sentinel DX4000. Back to the drawing board. Man I wish they made this DX4000 more tolerant of their own bloody drives.

At what temperature this drive is running for you?

Since this is 7200rpm should I worry about overheating in 3 in 2 5.25 bay dock or even 5 in 3? (looking at ICY DOCK MB453SPF-B and ICY DOCK MB455SPF-B)

This one has never run warm for me. My computer is currently running three internal drives, and this one is at 26 degrees (Celsius). It has always run cooler than my processor and graphics card as well. In a system with standard cooling, you might see this one run warmer than mine, but I would be surprised if it ended up warm enough to overheat, since it doesn't generate the necessary heat to do so on its own. In other words, the only way I see this one overheating is if your computer is already in danger of doing so without it.

What does the SE and RE designation mean for these drives?

According to the datasheets, the Re is for "high intensity datacenter applications", and the Se is more "bulk storage" and "entry level servers". Those who own this model, what is your firmware?

I just checked all 5 drives I have in production and they are all running firmware 01.01A01. These drives have a manufactured date of 19/jun/2013 or so.
