Can this be used in an aging desktop computer?

It can be, but you can find cheaper and with more storage for a desktop. This is a VERY thin (7mm, as opposed to the normal 9.5mm high) laptop drive (which is 2.5 inches wide), and that makes it more expensive. I believe you can get a 3.5 inch 1 or 2 TB hybrid drive for the same price.

Is this drive compatible with a Gateway NV52L06u?

Yes, this hard drive will fit and work without issue. It is a bit thinner than your stock hard drive, I suggest putting a bit of ESD safe foam in with it.

I have installed 4 of these hard drives in various laptops and they perform flawlessly! Very quick boot and lot's of space.

its says" Up to 5× faster than a traditional 5400-RPM HDD" i run a 7200 rpm hd in my lappy, how much faster is this gonna be?

As the Jeffery's said; be aware that there are documented difficulties cloning an existing drive onto this drive. I initially tried cloning my old 500GB / 8M cache / 5400 RPM onto this using Acronis True Image and the Windows license validation got hosed up. Again, Seagate acknowledges that that happens sometimes.

When I bought a newer laptop last month I did a fresh Win7Pro install. The difference I see is programs I use often load incredibly fast. But bear in mind newer Intel chipsets will take detect and full advantage of the 8GB FLASH cache on this drive where older chipsets will not. That's the case for me.

But as was said above, the amount of speed increase from this drive will depend on several external factors such as processor and ram speed, etc. So it's all relative.

According to Seagate, the ST500LM000 should be compatible with:
All MacBooks & MacBook Pros (excluding MacBook Air & MacBook Pro Retina).

Based upon this, the answer is 'no', it is not compatible.

Is this drive compatible with my dell inspiron 1525?

I bought this same drive for my Toshiba Satellite model L505-S5984 with the same intel Core Duo processor. My unit is similar in age (running windows 7) and similar specs. I replaced a 250GB drive and would highly recommend this HD.
To be doubly certain if this drive will work for you, go to the Dell customer support website, put in your service tag number (on bottom of machine) and it will tell you if there is a Dell compatible 500GB drive available. If the answer is yes, then this drive will work for you.  If it does not show a 500GB drive, call them and they will tell you if this drive will work in your machine.

Will this hard drive fit any laptop?  I have an ASUS that's about 2 years old.

Yes it will fit as a replacement for 'laptop' hard drives.  It is a 7mm (thick or height )drive which matches the height of the factory installed drives.  The only ones at Newegg that are misleading are the 'enterprise' drives that are 2.5" drives but are 15mm in thickness or height.

You will find for most applications you will get close to SSD performance at a lower price per MB.  Boot times will not improve that much as the hypbrid means that there is a SSD like cache in the drive.  During boot that cache will be empty, hence no improvement from the hybrid technology.  Once the system has booted the cache is loaded and you will experience better overall systems performance.

Is it compatible with Compaq Presario f500 laptop?

I put this drive into a Toshiba Tecra M8, works great.  I can't speak definitively for other laptop models such as yours, but from my understanding of this hybrid drive, it should be as compatible as any SATA drive.  It is not the same as an SSD which may require some tweaks.  The hybrid part is all taken care of by the embedded controller on the drive, so from the laptop's perspective it looks just like a regular hard drive.  No special drivers or anything.

Initially I did a new install of Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit on my laptop with the original hard drive (upgrading from xp), then cloned this to the new seagate hybrid drive.  Swapped the drives and it booted up with no fuss.

Along with upgrading my ram to 4gb this has revitalized my 6-year-old laptop, it now loads windows 7 faster than the original drive loaded windows xp.

Does the drive come with software for imaging the old laptop drive so it's easy to swap out the old rive?

Yes and no - the 'Seagate DiscWizard' can be downloaded from Seagate support.  It will recognize a Seagate product so you don't have to buy Acronis. Neither Seagate nor Western Digital still provides hard discs (since most people now have internet access).

Yes, but I recommend you remove the hard drive in the laptop and check the height of the existing hard drive and the space available  to confirm this hard drive will fit.  This hard drive and the one in the system are the same Length and Width, the height may be a bit off, but for most laptops it is not an issue.

Question 10

I have an HP ENVY DV7 laptop and need to replace the main hard drive... we will install Windows 7 or 8... this will be the boot drive... is this compatible with that Laptop?

Hi Michael...  I don't have the laptop available to me right now, but the specs on the HD that came in it are:  HGST, SATA 3.0GB/s7200RPM... HDD: 7K750-750... Type: TS7SAD750.. which I assume is a 7200 RPM 750GB drive with 3 Gb of SSD...  our situation is a bit complicated, but we only had the laptop running for about 6 hours and then, when trying to start it up again, it could not find the boot drive.  This occurred twice and we get no satisfaction from HP Tech support.  The first one we bought we were able to send it back and get a replacement... then the same thing happened to that one... since the 30 day replacement policy had expired, we are stuck with either fixing it ourself or trying to work with HP again... we thought we would first try a new hard drive and install from scratch.  The original had Windows 8...  we read some forums about this happening if Windows did an update to 8.1 and the BIOs was not current.. we explored that with no success...  so.. we will try a new hard drive.  By the way, looking at the original HD by connecting it as an additional HD showed it had nothing on it... trying to do a re-install to that HD resulted in not finding the HD... we still don't know what is going on with that and may pursue it later...
