What RPM speed is this drive?

This is a 5400 RPM drive, however because it is USB 3.0 transfer speed will be limited by the USB 3.0 interface not the drive's RPM.  Portable drives like this on a USB 3.0 interface would not perform noticeably better at 7200 RPM.

If you are concerned with transfer speed look for ESATA or Thunderbolt; USB 3.0 is never going to be a super fast drive no matter the RPM.

is this item backward compatible for use with 2.0 usb?

Hooked mine up and seen no problem with 2.0. Most of my usb ports are 3.0. From what I've read  just transfers at 2.0 speed.

I purchased this here and can't seem to get it to work.  Instructions showed simply hooking to computer with wire.  Then what?  I wanted to remove photos & videos from computer and save in the Seagate.  
Please advise.  Also bought an Adata 32GB memory stick which I cannot figure out either.  Needless to say I'm new at computers at 66

1. After connecting the Drive to the computer as shown. If you using windows 7, click on the icon that looks like a folder on your task bar, this will open windows explorer. I7 Windows 8, click on the desktop tile the the icon that looks like a folder on the taskbar.
On the left side pane you will see listed all the drives and folders on your computer.
if the drive is hooked up correctly you see the Seagate name with a drive letter.
2. Simply right click on the folder you want to copy and choose "copy" from the menu.
3. Then right click on the Seagate drive and choose "Paste" from the menu.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all the folders you want to transfer

Same procedure applies if using the stick. look for the icon that looks like a fork on your computer, to insert the stick or cable from the drive

Yes, this unit is USB 2 compliant. It will work, you will not get the USB 3 speed, since you are plugging into USB 2 port, but it will work.

Is this backwards compatible with USB 2.0?

Yes.  All USB 3.0 drives are backwards compatible with USB 2.0.  You just don't get the faster speeds.

Is this drive compatible with Mac?

I don't have a Mac, but I do use  it interchangeably with Windows and Linux, so I would think it should work fine. Its possible you would need to reformat the drive, but that's unlikely.

Note* Anyone using MAC and write issues with the hard drive, download NTFS for Mac OS X - simple to use and change the hard drive to be able to write files to it.

Is this drive mac compatible?

You will need to download 3rd party software to enable your Mac to read NTFS. This drive comes formatted in NTFS. You can use Disk Utility (included in OS X) and partition the hard drive into 1 partition in a format that OS X can read.

I have an HP Pavilion a6442p desktop, windows Vista, -- will this unit work on this system? Like will the proper connection be there?

I can't answer about your specific system, but I have had several large USB 3.0 drives that have worked "just fine" on my Thinkpad T520 with Windows 7 connected using USB 2.0 ports.  It also works fine with a USB 3.0 adapter I bought to use with this laptop.  I can't imagine you having any problem that isn't also a problem for people with Vista or your specific HP desktop computer.

Is this drive compatible with an apple computer?

Seagate's web site indicates yes.  Oh course that assumes your Apple has a USB port with either version 3.0 or 2.0, or probably even 1.0 capability.
