We lose about 7% of the capacity on a 4 TB drive because the size of the units that we are sold (in base 10) do not equal the size of the units that the computer uses to divide up the drive (in base 2). Similar to how quarts and liters are really close in size but if you have 4 trillion liters and 4 trillion quarts, the difference becomes apparent! The math behind it is based on the fact that 2**10 is close but not equal to 10**3 (1024 != 1000). Hope this helps!
