How would these be for airplane use?  Are they open back headphones --which wouldn't muffle sounds from other passengers?

I do not think these would do well for airplane use.  Not only would they not muffle ambient sound from passengers and the plane, they would also allow sound to escape from the headphones and irritate surrounding passengers, especially if used at a loud volume.  In addition, these phones have a very long cord, and a large jack, better used with an amplifier than with mobile devices or the jack on most airplane arm rests.

Is the audio cord permanently attached or does it plug in to the headphones? If permanent, is it reasonably easy to replace?

The audio cord is removable. It plugs into the headphones.

my 9 year old wants these so when he is playing on his tablet or listening to music, do you think these would work for him ?

These are a bit bulky so consider the size of them for your child.  The adapter is also long, and is awkward when handling my phone.  I purchased these for my PC and are comfortable, however I would suggest something smaller and easier to use with a hand held device.

I like to play fps games on my PC. would these headphones be good for that?

I used these headphones for a year and play lots of FPS games. The HD518s have been awesome. They have good sound range and have a great base punch. They're not as good and the Sennheisers in the several hundred dollar range, but for under $100 these are excellent, the best you'll find.

How are this for gaming? Ineed to hear footssteps precisely and I dont see anything about sorround sound. Tx in advanced.

This headset is good overall, sounds can be distinguished from other sounds clearly , but i have no basis for comparison as these are my first real pair.  You may want to look at more high end(price?) models for precise in game audio reproduction.

On-ear? Bad description?

Wouldn't these be described as Supra-aural if they rested on-ear? Circum-aural is Sennheiser's description...

Ear cups this large encircle the entire ear and rest against your head - they don't sit "on" your ear.

These do encircle the entire ear and are thus circumaural, so I suppose that should be "over-ear" for clarity.
