Works as Advertised 5/20/2011 6:21:54 AM

Pros: Quality components and (long) cabling; weighted base.
Independant (meaning replaceable) power supply.
Healthy ~4 (IIRC) Amp UL rated power supply.
IDE-SATA bridge supports maximum IDE/PATA transfer rates ; relative low-latency response for random seeks.
IDE-SATA bridge allows access to PATA drive's S.M.A.R.T. data.

Cons: Must purchase 2 units for external drive-to-drive transfers.
Could include a small anti-static placement matt for 2.5 & 3.5" IDE/PATA drives.
(Personally use a patch of anti-static bubble wrap as a matt.)
Should include a small fan.
(Personally, make use of a case fan, tapping it into the 4-pin molex port.)
Not suitable for drives that run warm/hot.
Inconvenience - Storage after repeated use requires significant space ; inconvenient to keep track of it's many components ; bulky power supply

Overall Review: This is a bridge device meaning, don't expect to operate both IDE/PATA and SATA devices simultaneously over the single SATA cable. One or the other at-a-time. SATA drive connections are direct, not bridged. No problem pulling S.M.A.R.T. data for either (including IDE) drive interface type.

Great... when it worked 5/4/2011 7:43:24 PM

Pros: Great little adapter. Worked as advertised, made it really convenient to get data on/off a hard drive.

Cons: The eSATA connection stopped working, as well as the IDE connection. The only way I can hook up a HD is if it's SATA and use the USB connection from the unit. The eSATA connection, and IDE drives, don't work no matter the configuration.

Overall Review: It feels cheaply made and the slightest ding would break it to pieces. Flimsy buttons, weak door and not the sturdiest case on the thing. Probably won't be buying anything from sharkoon again...

Nice Adapter 11/16/2010 8:51:31 PM

Pros: Seems well made. All drive types (PATA and SATA) are recognized on both USB and Esata connections.

Cons: Esata cable is very stiff.

Overall Review: Don't leave the PATA cable plugged into the unit when inserting a SATA drive. Seems to cause porblems and the SATA drive is not recognized.

Great dock, first reviewer made a mistake 7/29/2010 2:42:58 PM

Pros: Great docking HDD, it does exactly what is advertised. The first reviewer clearly didn't read the manual correctly or received a defective unit. A SATA HDD works perfectly fine with the eSATA connection.

The manual states if you're using both an IDE HDD and SATA HDD via the eSATA connection only, only the IDE HDD will be available.

Cons: Just one, and the only reason why I took an egg off.

You can't use an IDE HDD and a SATA HDD at the same time with the eSATA connection. You have to use only the USB connection if you wish to transfer files between both HDD connections. It would be pretty much a perfect dock if it wasn't for that.

I have another dock with an eSATA connection so it's a non issue for me, but I can see how it can be annoying to some.

Overall Review: I'm quoting the manual since it's not available online.

"If you intend to operate both an IDE and a SATA hard disk drive with the QuickPort then please consider the following:

1. When connecting the device to a PC via the USB port only, both HDDs may be accessed.

2. When connecting the device to a PC via both the USB and the eSATA port, only the IDE HDD may be accessed.

3. When connecting the device to a PC via the eSATA port only, only the IDE HDD may be accessed."

Inexplicable design 7/24/2010 5:10:00 AM

Pros: A great idea - SATA & IDE drives available through a dock with USB 2.0 & eSATA cables!

Cons: The SATA drive ONLY WORKS THROUGH USB - this is indicated in the manual and proved to be true through my testing. The IDE drive works through USB & eSATA. This oddity of design is not described in the Newegg online product description.

Overall Review: That's right - your high speed SATA drive (1.5Gb/s or 3.0Gb/s) will ONLY work through the slow USB connection (300Mb/s) while your old (relatively) slow IDE drives can work through the high speed eSATA connector -- WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD THEY DESIGN IT THIS WAY? Got sent right back for a refund after reading this in manual and then testing proved this to be true.
