can you hook up an equalizer?

Yes, you can hookup an equalizer using the record out and external play back loop.  This is labeled  tape out/tape out.  I've done it.  It isn't quite as elegant as being able to break into the circuitry right before the input to the power amp part of the device, but it should work for you.  Some external equalizers have their own tape out/in loops to replace the functionality you loose by using the one in the receiver for the external EQ.   If you're in doubt, download the instruction manual for the receiver from the Sherwood site. I think you'll find that the Sherwood actually has two such loops, one labeled tape in/out and one labeled aux in/out.  You may need to experiment a little to be sure you're using the loop that is last in the chain right before the signal goes to the power amp portion of the receiver.

Why does the remote control periodically not respond?

my system is sensitive to pointing direction, it must be pointed at the sensor.  You may be too far away or off to the side.  Mine is only 8 to 10 feet away and at 90 degrees.  Hope this helps.

whre is the phono ground wire on the picture? the picture doesnt seem to be the one of the actual amp

Yes, the photo is faulty... on another site, you can see the ground wire to the left of the phono plug inputs.
