Does this drive feature auto backup, as in plug in and files automatically sync?

No it does not. How would it know what files you want to back up? the best way is to download the latest version of their software onto your computer from their website and then select what you want to back up. there are some preset most common selections or you can choose folders and files that you want.

if i connect my dslr and press the back up button, will it automatically transfer the files or do i need a laptop between the two? would i need a power source?

Sorry but I do not use the button. I use Windows backup on a schedule alternating 2 units each day to take off site. I understand the button does backup but haven't tried.
