I purchased two of these but have very little experience with external battery chargers. When I plus the charger into my Kindle and hit the button, the four lights come on to indicate the battery charger has a full charge and my Kindle indicates it is receiving a charge however the battery charger shuts off within a minute or two and is no longer charging my kindle. Is my charger defective or is there something I'm not aware of?

I have one version of this thing, though it looks different from the picture I see...(not sure whether or how the internals might differ?). To try to answer (the best I can), my battery will shut off if it detects that there's nothing pulling power from it anymore. It will turn off one light after the other in succession, about two per second (?), until they're all off. Three things that might apply to your situation:

- Some devices will stop pulling power when they are full. 
- Some devices will stop pulling power if the available amperage (from the battery in this case) is insufficient (this is almost universally implemented in software).
- If the wire becomes loose, the Elf will think the device is unplugged, and will stop providing power.

I see the Kindle might "require" 1.8 Amps to charge, while according to the newegg product page, the elf seems rated to provide 1.5 Amps, which is pretty close (I think mine is only rated at 1 Amp, which is not very close). If the Kindle doesn't like the available amperage, it might be shutting off.
