There is a DC power port; is that required to run a SATA disk or is powered from USB like the older IDE drives?  Does it include the power supply [brick]?  Thanks!!

no it comes with a usb plug that spits into two one red the other blue if u have usb 3 it doesn't need the red plug, if u plug into usb 2 then you will need another usb port for the red one to power it

Question 2

I'm not used to buying hard drives. Is this just a case for an external hard drive or is it the whole drive? Will i need to buy something else?  What is the use for this product? Having seen external hard drives go for $60, around $30 for what seems to be a case seems kind of strange.

It is just a drive case, if you purchase this - you will also need to purchase a hard-drive (without a case).

The cool thing about this case is you can easily open/close and insert different hard-drives.

Also, if the hard-drive you purchase fails or you need a bigger drive - you can keep the case and just buy a new hard-drive and swap it out. I have used these cases (and the older model) and they usually last around 5-6 years. During their life, I go through several hard-drives and if you work with a lot of disks, it's very convenient being able to swap the hard-drives quickly.
