"1000 watt (167x5 + 165, 3 ohm, 1kHz, 10%THD)" amplifier specs are truly horrible, appalling.  IF the 10% THD number is correct, this system should sound like the worst piece of junk.
A 1% THD would be reasonable.

How does it actually sound?

It sounds really decent, however it's one downfall is that for true Dolby sound from HDMI or Optical, you need a TV that supports multichannel pass through. I found this out the hard way. In short, the sound quality you get from this price range is exactly what you would expect. If you want the best sound quality be prepared to spend a lot more.

I have a 20-year old stereo and want to make sure this outfit will play cds, tapes and records through its amplifier. Will it?

the only inputs are a AUX/INPUT, SPDIF, and COAX.  i play my cds in the dvd drive, my turntable is connected to the AUX INPUT and my PC is connected with the SPDIF connection.  This isnt a true receiver with a million inputs in the back.  Your record player needs a built in PREAMP for sound to come from the speakers because there is no PHONO INPUT.  As far as tapes, i do not know.

I need something with a strong base to connect to my cpu. Is it easy to set up, and about how strong is the base?

This is a good set up to attach to a computer.  The design is solid.  The sound is great. The surround sound works great and it has strong bass   I bought this to replace a Bose system and I don't regret it.  The installation was pretty simple just follow the instructions in the book and you should not have any trouble.  Only  thing that I dont like about it is that the speakers  dont have long enough speaker wires to reach across the room.  But, you can splice new wires onto them.

The speakers are wired. The wireless part is a Bluetooth receiver connected to them.
