Can this player play a movie or see pictures from a USB thumb drive?

Hiya, Mark. Glad to try to help out here.

YES. IT CAN. I've got the unit's instruction manual open in front of me, and here's what it says:

1] On the right side of the player is a USB TYPE A INPUT JACK PORT= port accepts standard USB 2.0 male jack plug.

2) PLAYABLE MEDIA via this USB port input are MP3, JPEG, or video files. Here are the details:

3) MUSIC- Will play file format MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) = extension ".mp3"

PHOTO: (DCF format) = extension ".jpg." "jpeg"

VIDEO: MPEG-4 (simple profile) = extension ".mp4"

That's the Short & Sweet instruction manual info. Following that are 2 fine-print bullet-list paragraphs that get much more technical. I believe the gist of these 2 paragraphs adds up to this: the player should be able to play anything in the categories and formats listed above. Anything reasonably Everyday Normal should play just fine.

I really like this player. BTW, its supplied IR hand-held remote control is full-function = the remote control does EVERYTHING the unit's on-board controls do. Terrific!!!

Yes, hand-held remote is included, along with its 2 required AA batteries. It measures 6"L, 2"W, 1"D and has a textured half-cylindrical lower half that fits very comfortably and securely in the hand. 4 little feet at each corner of the bottom half sets it securely on a flat surface.

The remote's function soft-click actually individually up & down pushbuttons and rocker buttons are well-spaced and definitive = you know that you've pushed the button OK or not.

The remote control's functional capabilities are exactly as precise and categorically thorough as the controls on the player's body. The IR remote communicates superbly with the unit.

The picture on the unit is breathtaking--  very sharp, always balanced, and VIRTUALLY NO GLARE on the screen. The very good quality stereo speakers are located directly under the screen on the lid = they fire straight forward toward your ears.

Passive 3D movies are easily viewed in truly amazing 3D by covering only your left eye with a polaroid sunglasses lens. I've found that many new movies on DVD are in Passive 3D, but don't say so on the box.

5 Stars in every respect. SONY does it again.

Hi! Ummmm, I hunted all through this unit's instruction manual, and there was no mention of "Blu-Ray". That is the only hard fact I can give you. My personal opinion is that if this unit COULD play Blu-Ray, it would prominently say so = my gut instinct says "No, it won't play Blu-Ray". I'm pretty sure I'm correct in saying that. Suggestion: Hop online, GOOGLE Sony, take it from there and see if that helps. Good luck :)
