not all that versed in external hard drives but I want to be able to ensure that my data is replicated or backed up so if 1 hard drive in the bay crashes, my data is not lost.  Will this work?

Yes, it can be configured so your data is spread across all your external hard drives BUT you must have software that will tell the enclosure to back up your data and the drives must be larger than what you intend to back up. I have found this enclosure to be noisy and so cannot recommend.
