Question 1

How do you mount the 2.5"  SSD drives?  The manual doesn't show how to mount anything!

The trays in the new model have bottom mount screw holes for both 3.5 inch and 2.5 in drives.  One of the holes conflicts so on the 2.5 inch drives there are only 3 screw holes that line up. Since SSD drives weigh so little and there are no moving parts 3 screws is fine.

The Sata and power connectors must be in the tray facing the back of the backplane assembly.   The device only comes with screws for 3.5 inch drives these are american standard 6/32 flathead screws.

For 2.5 inch drives you will need to find 3mm screws with equally flat heads.  Standard screw heads will catch on the lower drive when you try to put the tray in.

Question 2

Can someone please confirm that this product only needs 2 SATA III connections to connect up all 3 drives?  I also see what looks like a 2 channel plug in the back.  What is this for?

The StarTech unit is only a box to hold the drives.  All power and control come from the disk controllers.  You will need one controller for each drive.

Question 3

What is the recommended power connector to use? power1 molex or power2? can i use both?

I hooked mine up with both the Molex and SATA power cords. I don't think it really matters which one you use.

Question 4

I find that I cannot use AHCI SataIII 6GB/sec with this unit. Is that correct?

I have successfully used the StarTech SATSASBAY3BK unit with a 6GB/s SATA III drives on both mine and my son's computers.  
Both use a combination of conventional disk drives mixed with solid state drives.

The conventional drives are made by Seagate and Western Digital. The SSD's are made by Samsung and OCZ.

I don't have any trouble at all.

To get the performance, you may need to:
1) set your BIOS to enable AHCI
2) install AHCI drivers (from your motherboard manufacturer
3) be sure to connect to a SATA III port on the motherboard

The disk should work in any event; it just might step down to a slower speed (I haven't noticed this on my systems).
