I'm trying to connect 2 monitors with hdmi but want to extend monitors not just duplicate them. Will this item work?

Yes, you can extend your desktop to the monitors connected with this unit (Windows 7 Pro). Works reasonably well for static content (like email), but you don't want to push video through these.
