I am wanting to connect the adapter to my laptop and run the HDMI to my TV for an external monitor... Would that work??

If your laptop is running Windows and has at least USB 2.0, yes, this will work. There might have a little bit of lag unless you use USB 3.0.

If your laptop is Linux based, the displaylink drivers may work but I have never tried that. Some Ubuntu users claim that it works for them.

Question 2

Can this work to stream something like ESPN 3 from my computer to my TV?  I have heard that something like this is not good for streaming.

It is just a multi monitor adapter for using two monitors when your video card only supports one.  Its basically a mini video card.  I don't know if that would hinder "streaming" at all quite frankly...or provide any benefit other than giving you an additional video output that you could hook to your television.

Each of these adapters will support one monitor connection. So, if you're looking to add two monitors, you'll need to get two adapters.

No, this is simply to add another monitor. It uses a USB 3 port to provide you an additional monitor without having to add a video card.
