I'm wondering if this adapter has it's own MAC address?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all NICs have a MAC address.  Nothing special about this NIC in that regard.

This is however an excellent NIC.  Better for a desktop or laptop with several USB ports.

There is another version of this NIC that has an additional 1 port USB hub on it.  If you have a device with only 1 or 2 ports you might want that instead so you can chain extra devices.

I think there is also a 2 port NIC version as well.

How do I install the drivers for this itam on a surface pro 2 when it does not a disk drive?

When I tried this on my friend's surface pro 2 it found the driver/installed it automatically.  Check your device manager.  If it is not seeing the device, try another device in your USB port and make sure it is recognized.  If it does not find that device you have a problem with your surface.

If it does find the other device, try the adapter in another computer and see if it finds the device.

Do I have to disable the LAN in BIOS (Windows 7) ?

To be precise, 'LAN' is not a piece of hardware that one can enable/disable in the BIOS settings.  LAN stands for LOCAL AREA NETWORK.  Most computers come with an Ethernet port for connecting to a LAN that can either be disabled from the bios, or it can be disabled in Win7.
1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
2. In the left-hand column, click Change adapter settings.
3. In the new window that opens, right-click Local Area Connection and select Disable.

This product can either replace a broken port, or serve as a secondary port for advanced uses.  The one I purchased has been excellent in speed and reliability for years.

will this device work with windows 10?

Plugged-in and worked right away on Windows 10, I plugged it into my only Windows 10 machine at the time (USB 2.0).  No Driver issues, so it should also work on USB 3.0, but I have not checked that.

Is this compatible with a MacBook Pro running Yosemite?

Yes. You need to download the Mac driver from StarTech web site, but after you install that it works great.

I have a sff computer with usb 3 ports and only one ethernet port.  I want to run Pfsense on this by using a usb to ethernet adapter plus the built in port.  Will it work for supporting multiple vlans?

Yes.  It works just like an onboard NIC.

Yes, it'll work with USB 2.0 ports. You won't be able to get a full 1000 mbit/sec (gigabit) performance from it, though, because USB 2.0's max speed is 480 mbit/sec. However, that's still a tremendous amount of speed and almost certainly more than enough for most users.

What is the chipset?
It supports IEEE 802.1Q VLAN Tagging but can i specify more than one vlan on the NIC?

Newegg asked if I could answer your question cause I bought one over a year ago, but my usage is simply to add a NIC when I'm playing with configuring a new network device and don't want to disconnect my other NIC.

When I look at devices it say: ASIX  AX88179, so its made by ASIX
electronics Corp.

When I look at the driver and advanced properties I see this with respect to VLAN

- Packet Priority and VLAN
 - VLAN ID

I have one that defaults to PXE boot & it was causing my setup to lock up. So yes, they can.
