I am just trying to make sure I would be able to use this adapter to connect an external hard drive (firewire cable) to my Mac (USB port)? Seems pretty straight forward, but trying not to waste time or money. thanks!

If you are trying to connect to a firewire cable, this is not what you need, since it is USB only.  You'd need to find the comparable firewire adapter.
