Pros: This is my 5th SuperMicro barebones server, and they are always very reliable and sturdily built. Some of the SuperMicro barebones servers do not come with heatsinks, however this one does - big fat heavy chunks of copper.
Pros: Let me first start off with with what else I purchased for the entire system.
2 x Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6GHz Socket 771 Active or 1U Processor
2 x Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 FB-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered Server Memory Model KVR667D2D4F5/2G - OEM
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
Now once we received everything I actually had a new technician, who had no experience with servers and less than 6 months experience, build the system. He was able to assemble everything in less than 30 minutes. The system was very easy to use and get put together. The system works great and as far as OSes, I would probably recommend a 64bit OS to be able to fully enjoy the maximum amount of ram that this system will handle. If this is your first server or you have built several in the past I would recommend this kit as an easy to build system. No complicated bells and whistles.
Cons: Something to note, this is a 1 U and as such the fans do have to be powerful. Now this isn't really a con but you need to be aware that the system will be noisy.
Overall Review: If you are getting this system as an in house server you have made an excellent decision.
Pros: Fast, inexpensive, rock solid, reliable. Easy to put together, seriously it takes about 10 minutes to plop the hd, memory, and processors in there and about 15 minutes to install and configure everything you need. Love it Worth every penny. Go Supermicro!
Cons: Somewhat noisy, hey at least its cool. FB-Dimms.. ehh...
Overall Review: Installed 2 Xeon 3065's 1 GB Manufacture Recommended Adata FB-DIMM RAM (2X512), 2 WD 160 Caviar drives, used Raid 0, installed CentOS x_64 bit, runs like a champ very pleased. I saved my company some extra money for more toys too so they were happy. Perfect for web hosting.
