Update to Earlier Review 6/21/2019 10:18:16 AM

Pros: Enables SATA III SSDs to achieve or approach their maximum speed.

** Windows generic drivers work fine in most systems. Do NOT install Marvell drivers from SYBA if your motherboard has a Marvell SATA controller; they will conflict! **

Has 4 SATA ports.

Connection requirements now more clearly defined in "Specifications" tab on this page.

Cons: Installation instructions for use with a boot drive are still vague.

Heatsink on the controller chip is good for all normal computer tasks, but the heatsink is rather small for cooling if you're trying to transfer HUGE amounts of data. SEE OTHER THOUGHTS BELOW FOR SOLUTION.

SATA connector sockets are not very sturdy so be sure to plug and unplug SATA cables carefully.

Overall Review: **If you wish to transfer huge amounts of data through this card then I suggest using a case fan in the side panel of your PC case to blow fresh air onto the card. Alternatively, you coud remove the card's small heatsink and replace it with a larger one, but that would void the warranty, so probably better to go with the side panel fan.**
Another user mentioned that this card "Fails Under Heavy Data Transfer Load With Linux ...". He describes trying to transfer over 300GB in one go and another transfer of a still larger amount. The little heatsink on my SYBA card gets hot when I transfer 50GB or more of data in one go. I suspect that huge amounts such as 300GB or more may cause the controller chip to overheat, thus inducing errors/data corruption. These are, after all, not server-class or industrial quality cards. They are cleverly designed, low cost cards that provide home users or maybe small businesses with extra SATA ports for normal, everyday computing tasks.
One other possibility is that the user who experienced data corruption/errors on huge transfers was multi-tasking and pushing his PC's power supply to near its limit. I have seen data corruption occur a couple of times when the psu sagged and hard drives weren't getting enough power. This happened to me with an otherwise good 6-year-old Corsair 750-watt psu. Later, after an unasked for spontaneous reboot or two, I installed a new Seasonic psu and all problems disappeared. Not complaining here, just sayin' sometimes things go wonky when the psu begins to sag under load.

Previously i complained that "Connection requirements are unclear in Newegg product info." Glad to see they have now corrected that.

SYBA website has drivers available for download. They also have a contact form if you want to ask a question for tech support. In the past they responded to my questions the same day or the next day.

If you want to connect your Windows (or other operating system) boot drive to this card, please do the following to avoid problems:
1. Install the card in PCI-e x4 slot (or x8 or x16). DO NOT ATTACH YOUR BOOT DRIVE YET.
2. Boot up and install drivers for the card. (Do NOT install Marvell drivers if your motherboard has a Marvell IDE/AHCI/SATA controller. Use Windows generic drivers instead.)
3. Restart the computer and let it boot up to Windows again to complete the driver install.
4. Next, shut down completely. Now, connect your Windows boot drive to the card.
5. Power on the computer and go IMMEDIATELY into the system BIOS setup screen. In the Boot section of the BIOS select this card with your attached boot drive as the First Boot Device. If there are several hard drives you may need to move this one to the 1st position in the list of hard drives. ** Failure to do this may cause your boot drive's Master Boot Record to be corrupted. So, be sure you know beforehand which key on your keyboard to press to enter the BIOS. **
6. Save and Exit from the BIOS. Computer should now boot up to Windows and provide fast performance.

Some users ran into problems because they connected their boot drive to the card before the card had drivers installed. This produced boot error messages and in some cases the Master Boot Record was corrupted so that, even after installing drivers, they still couldn't boot up and felt as though this add-on card had hosed their system. It just goes to show that it pays to do your homework before plunging into any upgrade!

Add-on cards such as this are plug-and-play (almost) if you only attach secondary data drives or DVD drives. But, for use with a boot drive you must ensure that the card is first installed with appropriate drivers, and that the card/boot drive is selected as 1st hard drive in the BIOS.

Excellent FreeNAS RAID Controller 6/2/2019 8:54:51 AM

Pros: Worked right out of the box (rootb) with my old Intel DG965OT, Core 2 Duo, FreeNAS experiment. It is connected to two 2TB rotating rust drives in a RAID 0 configuration. Motherboard BIOS recognized the addin card and found the disks with no tweaking necessary. The x2 SATA controller plugged into the Gen 1, x16 slot with no difficulties. FreeNAS installation had no difficulties identifying the two disk drives. WiFi backup is slow ( as expected) at about 20MB/s, but wired Ethernet is right were I would expect for this dated technology - 120MB/s. For just $34 I was able to do proof of concept and now will build a true NAS box - with all parts coming from NewEgg of course. All-in-all a really good product for this MB and software installation.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I definitely would recommend this product. It's a good 'bang-for-the-buck' product and depending on your MB and BIOS should work happily in a x16 slot. I did not try this in a Windows configuration so I cannot speculate as to capability. However, that being said, if your MB will recognize the sata controller then you windows configuration should see it as well.

I get nearly 1,000 Megabytes/Sec with a 4-drive RAID 0 array; you should know how to locate and update firmware. 4/13/2019 3:16:59 PM

Pros: Works with an ASUS Sabertooth AMD 990FX/SB920 chipset-based motherboard.

My configuration:

4x Seagate 12TB Exos drives
Software utilities and drivers:
-- MSUSetup v4.1.0.2031
-- drvSetup 1.0.0.1063
-- Marvell driver version:
Hardware specs:
BIOS Version:1.0.0.1028
Firmware Version: 2.3.0.1078
Boot Loader Version: 2.1.0.1009
Driver Version: 1.2.0.1049
Chip Revision ID: A1

Cons: DOES NOT WORK with a Gigabyte AMD 890GX/SB850-based motherboard.

Overall Review: I'm using two of these cards in each one of my servers, and can transfer data between arrays at the limit of the PCIe 2.0 bus -- about 1Gbytes/sec. That's with traditional drives in a RAID 0 array, not with SSDs.

DO NOT Mix cards with different chip revisions or different firmware. That will cause problems.

All drives in the array should be the same model with the same firmware.

It had heat problem 8/28/2018 11:31:41 AM

Pros: It worked great when cold.

Cons: After a few minutes, the board heated up, then it stopped functioning.

Overall Review: Glue a 30mm fan on top of heatsink. Problem solved, no more heat problem.

Update: NO ONE CARES 2/21/2018 10:38:37 AM

Pros: DON'T EXPECT SUPPORT FROM SYBA. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS!

Cons: Instructions:
The instructions are vague and are outdated. You must have computer knowledge to install this card because you cannot simply follow the instructions. They were not written to include Windows 10. The card will still work with Windows 10, but the process to install the card is different because the Device Manager in Windows 10 handles new devices differently than in previous systems. In this case, it doesn’t show up in “unknown devices” and ask you to choose the drivers, instead, it automatically assigns generic drivers to the card which won’t work. Unless you screenshot a before and after picture of Device Manager, you will have no clue what driver is new and is assigned to the card, so you won’t know which one it is to change and update to the drivers from the website.
Syba’s Awful Support:
I purchased this card on November 28, 2017, and I emailed the first time about 3 days later when I tried installing that card and wasn’t having any luck. Keep in mind, I have done this before and am A+ certified. While I don’t know everything, I was stumped, and sometimes, emailing tech support is what needs to happen to move forward. A week later, I still didn't receive a reply, so I emailed again. And again, and again, and again. Now, February 15, 2018, I decided to call that Thursday and speak with someone instead of emailing. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume they never received the emails (although I was sure they did, my email works).
Since the card has a three-year warranty, I figured since Syba didn't respond to emails that they'd surely be able to help me on a phone call. I spoke with Immanuel from tech support and he said he would look into it and get back to me later that day. I didn't hear from him the next day, Friday, so I called a little after the same time I spoke with him on Thursday afternoon. I asked to speak with him and they put me right on with him, and I asked if he had researched anything and why he didn’t get back to me like he promised. He said no, he hadn’t researched anything, and that Thursday was a “very busy day”. Ok, we are in Friday, so why didn’t you start working on my issue Friday? He said he needed to do some research and felt that the card is fine, and that if his hunch is correct, the Marvell drivers of the card aren't compatible with my motherboards onboard Marvell RAID controller, and he would get back to me after speaking with his manager about swapping cards to one that is compatible. Note: there are no notes or warnings on any of the product pages stating that it isn’t compatible with my motherboard, so I felt it was worth noting that they were willing to exchange cards. Well, that was Friday’s dream. I waiting until Tuesday, February 20th to call again - that's almost 3 full business days - and he said he didn't talk to his manager yet! I asked (again) why he hadn’t called me back to at least update me and he said that he was trying the best he can. No. That’s not the best. News flash to anyone in an IT or help desk role: when you promise a customer that you’re going to contact them, contact them! Even you don’t have any new information. You, the technician, are responsible for setting the pace and expectations and if you can’t meet them, then don’t set them. (Is my ITIL knowledge kicking in?)
I had told him EVERY phone call that I needed this card ASAP because I need to get work done on my PC and I have no other PC to do my work from. Each time, he said he'd get back to me within a business day. NOT ONCE did he or anyone from Syba call or even email me with an update. I work in IT, and this is NOT how customers should be treated. No one cares, takes initiative, or responds back. That’s Syba for you. Terrible.
The reason I contacted support:
Here’s exactly what I did since the card did not show up as an "unknown device" in Device Manager like the instructions said to. I skipped installing the software on the CD and downloaded the software and drivers from the product support page because they are up to date. I installed everything and tried control + m on startup which did nothing. I did some research, and I am sure I installed everything and I was doing it right. I was, and I uninstalled all the software from my PC and went to the card's web page and downloaded and installed the software and drivers again. Same thing: Marvell BIOS won’t load. The drivers show up twice in device manager, and the web page utility is viewable but disabled, but I can see the card but can’t edit it. I can also see my motherboard’s boot SSD controller. Turns out, the Marvell drivers aren’t compatible and will fight each other. The 2 Marvell 88SE9172 chips on my GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 R5 (rev. 1.0) AM3+ motherboard is incompatible with the RAID card’s Marvell 88SE9230 driver.

Simple installation and setup 7/10/2017 3:53:29 AM

Pros: Has bracket for low-profile case
Comes with cables
Works with Windows 10
RAID setup was easy
Online docs are good for Windows

Cons: They have 2 websites syba.com and sybausa.com use the latter
http://www.sybausa.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=64_77_86&product_id=183&filter=38
It took me about 10-15 minutes to find, download and update the driver
-1 egg for website(s) You are a business, fix your websites!

Overall Review: Once installed it worked fine, it was being installed as a RAID 1 controller. I would recommend it for a RAID controller on a PC. Not sure of the speed reduction of a RAID 10 setup. RAID 1 test was 5.2 Gb/s
