Question 1

How many drives does this hold? I can't find it in the description.

This enclosure holds one 3.5 inch drive.  I have two of these units, each with a single 2TB disk drive.  Each unit is connected to separate DirecTV HD-DVR by eSATA cables.  They reside inside an entertainment system cabinet, side-by-side with an 8-inch gap between them, at least 6 inches away from the inside walls of the entertainment unit.  One of the enclosures has been inside the cabinet for about 3 years and the other about 1 1/2 years (since the hard drive in the DTV HD-DVR its connected to failed).  The DVR with the failed drive works fine and now has about 4 times the recording capacity that it had with the stock DTV HD.

If I have a need for another external drive enclosure like this one, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Question 2

does this enclosure support sata 1, 2 and 3.  docs say both yes and only sata 1 & 2?

Don't know. but I used it to back up my Dell XPS 8700 to a 1tb Seagate hybrid drive and it worked like a champ. then put the hybrid drive in the XPS 8700 and the computer booted in less than 10 sec. also formatted a Seagate 3tb drive for my 8700 & 2 1tb for an old GX280 with win XP & Win 7. Hope this helps. I only know enough to be dangerous. Would I buy this again. YES
