No it does not. The hdmi is only an output. I use the three component video in and out connection. And frankly this is the only real vhs to dvd or dvd to vhs player/recorder worth looking at on the market right now.

Does this combo record both VHS and DVD?

Hello, it does record either VHS and DVD.  It does both well and is very easy to use.  For DVD's just finalize after you record to play on other machines than the one you used to record.  If you are just playing on this machine you do not need to finalize.  No finalization for VHS of course.

I really recommend this product and use it daily.

Can you play a DVD and record it to VHS?

Well the short answer is yes and no.  YES if the dvd disc is not encrypted with a copyright code.  Burning a dvd to vhs tape - or burning a vhs tape to a blank dvd using this machine is very simple and straightforward. NO if using a commercial dvd that is encrypted as the encryption is designed to prevent copying.  Not all commercial dvd discs are encrypted, but most are, especially newer ones.  Hope this helps, at least a bit.

Yes.
What's the point of a tuner anyway if you have to always leave it set to channel 3 to get the signal from your cable/satellite box because this device cannot tell the proprietary descrambler to change channels?  Better to use a cable that doesn't even support channel modulation in the first place and get a cleaner signal.  So, there's no coaxial input or output on this, which means you can't use this with an old standard-definition analog television without piping it through another device in between.

No it does not. I have been busy and am just now installing. That is when I found that it must be setup via the TV and our old TV does not have the necessary menu to do this. I have a new TV, but my wife has an eye problem and does not like the large flat screen. I bought the Toshiba because of the VCR and the fact that we still have some old tapes I wanted to see. I still think it is a good package and will use it elsewhere soon. However, if you need the tuner, this is not the one to buy.

I don't believe it does. I'm using it to load DVDs and VCR tapes into my computer.  The specs from to toshiba say it needs an external tuner to record tv.  If u have a satellite receiver, it would work fine recording that. Just not off air stations.

Question 10

Using an air antenna for digital T.V..  Can I just attach the antenna to the Toshiba DVR620 or will I need to attached the antenna to a converter box and them into the DVR620?

The 620 does not have an integrated TV tuner: it is simply a recorder and cannot by itself receive any on-air signals. To record any TV signals directly,   it must be connected either to a cable TV set top box or to a DTV converter box (if your TV does not have a digital tuner) that receives on-air TV channels via an antenna.

In your setup you would connect the 620's input to an output on your TV  (assuming it has a digital tuner) and record whatever channel your TV is tuned to. Then you would connect the 620's output back to the TV to watch what you have recorded. The manual included with the 620 gives explicit connection diagrams and instructions.
