are these weatherproof? I'm looking for something to control my patio lights that plug directly into an always energized outlet on my patio.

They aren't, but my outdoor outlets (in a fairly new house) have a weatherproof hinged plastic bubble cover and these are small enough to fit inside and worked great for outdoor Christmas lights last winter. If you have the metal covers with no room inside, you might want the outdoor smart plug instead. Unfortunately they cost more, are significantly larger, and have 2 outlets.

Any idea what the current cap is on these? I had a different smart plug I tried to use for a space heater (1500W) and burned out the plug instantly.

The specs say 12 amps. That would be about 1400 watts. You may have exceeded the maximum amperage of the device. I would be hesitant to connect any device greater than about 1200 or 1250 watts. That would be about 10 amps. It's a good practice to leave a bit of buffer.
