Can this switch be added to another switch to extend my network or does it have to go to my router?

I think some people that have answered this question are confusing HUB logic with switch logic. the idea of a switch is that a packet coming in gets routed to its destination, whereas HUB logic it re-broadcasts { repeater } everything that comes in to all other ports. The whole idea of switches came about because the more HUBs you added to a network the slower it got as you had to wait your turn to transmit. where switches allowed simultaneous traffic to occur over a backplane. now of course if you saturate your uplink connection to your router you will indeed see a slowdown, but you're more likely to bottleneck the Internet connection before that happens { Unless you're one of those lucky people that have a fiber-optic connection} or doing a heavy system to system transfer.

How do I hook this up to my router?

Plug the switch into the power outlet. Place a cable from one of the LAN ports of your router into any of the ports then plug your peripheral into another port (I usually use the last port so that I can remember later on which cable is which without tracing them). The switch auto-negotiates cables and connections.

Does this device support port mirroring?

No, this is a simple, unmanaged switch; not a high-dollar Cisco switch. If you want port mirroring get something wit a dedicated port analyzer.

Question 4

I had to have my cable co. replace my modem but the one they used only had one out that I had to use for my computer. Is this what I need so I can connect the rest of my items (game consoles, T.V., etc.) ? If not can someone direct me to the proper device? I'm on a very fixed income so lets keep it frugal, ok?

Ron, the answer is complicated. If the company gave you a "modem" that's also a router and firewall, then this is all you need.

Without getting into the details, if you open up your network settings on your computer or console you can look at your device's "IP Address".  If this number starts with "192." or "10.", then this will work for you.  Please note, under this scenario, if you go to Google and type "what's my IP" you will get a DIFFERENT number.

If your device's IP address starts with anything else, you will probably need to buy a "router" to put between this device and the modem.  If you search for a tp-link and "home router" you'll find a few options.  Many of them come with additional ethernet ports or provide wifi.

What is the backplane on this? what through put will it handle before it degrades?  4-5 Gbs

Since the answer is not obvious.  The T-Link website shows a packet forwarding rate of  7.4Mpps (packets per second).
 
  Actual throughput depends on packet size, but between large 1500-byte and small 64-byte network mgmt packets, say your average packet size is 800 bytes.  CCIEtools website has a conversion widget that shows this as 44Gbit per second throughput. Theoretical, of course.  1k packets give 55Gb (6.9GB/sec) throughput; assuming that the switch can handle large packets at the speed posted.

Are you able to mount this device? Holes on the bottom?

Yes there are mounting holes on bottom. You'll need to make your own template for mounting screws in correct position but that was real easy enough. I have mine mounted on backside of TV stand.

Would someone kindly type in the writing on the power adapter that specifies input power and output power? I'm wondering if I can also use this overseas with a power plug adapter (but not a transformer).

Has this product been security-audited?  i.e. no backdoors, etc?

IMHO this is purely a switch. As far as I can see it is always used downstream of your router which normally protects against intrusion. It is difficult for me to conceive of any backdoor mechanism that could be placed in a switch that could be addressed or triggered as a backdoor.

Since TP-Link is responsible for the switch ROM, they could better answer your question.

I have three devices in my living room and one ethernet plug.  Can i plug my three devices into this switch and get ethernet connection to all three?
