Whats the range on it? I have an AirPort Express currently, and I'm looking for "across the house" kind of coverage.

I have my router positioned roughly in the center of the house and my laptop is in a room about 60 ft (as a crow could fly if it could fly through walls) from the router.  The router and laptop communicate fine at this distance, although the bit rate is reduced.  At this distance the bit rate is anywhere between 12 and 17 Mbs while if I am in the same room as the router at a distance of 10 ft or so, the bit rate is about 22 Mbs.  If I am on the patio (about 40-50 feet in the opposite direction from the "computer room") the bit rate is also down in the 12-17 Mbs range.  I have discussed this with Trendnet techs and they indicate that this is normal and that the farther the wireless device is from the router, the lower the bit rate.  Hope this helps.

will this router work with DSL ?

Yes, it should work fine with DSL, but if you are using a 2wire router already, you need to find out what IP address it is using and use a different IP address for the TRENDnet. Also rename the 2wire(or disable this device wireless) and TRENDnet SSID to something you can remember, so that when your device(s) scans for available wireless networks, you can login to the right one. Also invoke the highest security encryption for your wireless on both devices as they default to none.

I have Time Warner Cable and may get FIOS. Will this router work with coax?

This router does not have a coax input, so you would need to connect it via ethernet cable. That is your only option with this router. Your modem should have the coax input on it, and then you run an ethernet cable from your modem to the router to get it to work. So yes, it will work, but you can't plug a coax cable into it... The coax goes to the modem and the ethernet cable connects the modem and the router for Internet connectivity.

Question 4

Where is the source for the open-source firmware? Trendnet lists "open source" firmware on its website, but it's just a .bin for flashing. Where's the source code, and which project is the firmware from?

Question 5

Does this have mounting holes anywhere on it for mounting it to a wall?

Accepted Answer

No. Both sides are flat in the middle and curved slightly at the front and back but are smooth. The back has all the ports and jacks and the front a bunch of lights.  I used a couple of those 3M Command Velcro strips to mount it to the wall.  It weighs practically nothing and the strips are rated for like 5 or 8 lbs each.

Is this a replacement for a Comcast router?

If your Comcast router has a "cable TV" connection and has wifi to allow multiple devices to connect to it and share the internet connection, then what you have is a "modem router" and the Trendnet (wifi router) is probably not a direct replacement.

I'd suggest that you contact Comcast and find out what you have. There are many Comcast approved modem+wifi routers and if you want, you could buy just the "modem" and then you can use pretty much any wifi router out there in the market.

Question 7

Can this be set up as a wireless bridge.  That is, I connect it to my existing router, and it broadcasts a wireless signal with its own SSID?

I believe that it can.  I'm pasting in a segment from the user's manual which indicates that this is possible (although it also recommends bridging to a router of the same make/model.

Wireless bridging using WDS (Wireless Distribution System)
Wireless (2.4GHz or 5GHz) > Basic

Wireless bridging using WDS allows the device to create a wireless bridge with other WDS supported wireless routers and access points configured in WDS mode to bridge groups of network devices together wirelessly. Simultaneously, the router will also function in access point mode allowing wireless client devices such as computers, game consoles, mobile phones, etc. to connect in order to access network resources from multiple groups of network devices as well as the Internet.
Note: You can create up to four WDS bridge connections on each wireless band (2.4GHz and 5GHz). WDS (Wireless Distribution System) is not currently standardized and may not connect to different model wireless routers or access points, therefore, when using WDS, it is recommended to use the same model and version for wireless bridging.

Can i use this with DSL?

Yes, this router will work with DSL, cable, satellite etc. As long as you use it in conjunction with a modem for your service with an ethernet connection.  This device is not a modem and some  older DSL/cable/satellite/etc. modems, back in the day, used a USB connection to your computer.

hello, I'm looking for a router that will give internet connection for a 2'500 ft home. I have a netgear 108mbps now. We cancelled directv service went to streaming and are now having problems we connectivity. We have 4 TVs 3 computers that are dependent on the wifi. Can anyone help me? I need to find out how big or what kind of router that I need. Also, have been reading comments...how do you use another router in another room that's not hooked to a modum?

We have a similar house size and setup.  This router is nice, but not enough to stream across the house.  We have two TVs that stream.  I had to run some cables to the rooms and hard wire the modem to the main switch.  So our Wifi routers are wired to a central switch.  You could easily stream from the Wifi router or cable it in.  If you are hoping to use one Wifi router for all the TVs in your home, you will be disappointed, especially in a 2,500 foot house.  We use 4 Wifi routers in our 3,000 home.  As to connect multiple switches  together, there are a lot of Google articles explaining how.

How does this product compare to the Belkin N450?

I cannot compare it with the Belkin N450 but I can tell you this:
If you update to the latest firmware this has most of the quirks worked out.  It is responsive, you have dual band WiFi 2.4 and 5, guest networks and seems to play well with multiple OS platforms.  It did seem a little sluggish on the SAMBA/USB support but I have not tried that since the latest firmware update.  The other nice feature for me was the easy configuration of the DDNS feature (I use this for remote access and it has been reliable no matter if I am on DSL or Cable networks.  The Cisco r180W is a much nicer unit for small office/multiple access but the signal strength was just a little better on this TrendNET unit.  That's all.
