Can this tester connect to a bare wire or does it require a connector on the end of the wire?

It requires a connector on the end of the wire. Having said that, if that falls into your needs, this is an excellent tester. Very easy to use, the display couldn't be simpler. I used it all over my house. My wiring is rock solid now.
