Does this 3 pack come with the power over Ethernet injectors?

Yes, The power injectors are included... Keep in mind though the injector boxes themselves do not support speeds over 100Mbps. Which works out perfectly because these are only 100Mbps boxes anyway.

Question 2

Do the wireless clients have to be on a different sub net than wired connections? For example if my main router/gateway is 192.168.0.1 can wireless clients have ip addresses like 192.168.0.5?

Yes they will be on the same subnet. These wireless access points by default have no DHCP server functions on them, they do not assigned IP addresses. They get themselves an IP address from your router/gateway and pass along clients devices requests for IP addresses to the router/gateway.

I have setup about 20 sets of these access points over the years and have always been happy with them. They do require at least a computer/server to install the Unifi controller software that controls and provisions the APs. Setup is simple and has a nice web based wizard to walk you through it all. To make sure that the APs are found for the initial setup you should have them all plugged into the same network switch with the computer/server if possible.

Do these come in 3 separate boxes or 1 box containing all 3?

mine was received in 1 box containing all three. It came with everything needed including the poe injectors.

Question 4

Do they support a guest wifi  account?

Yes, Once the Controller Software is installed, you can configure a Guest Access Point, as well as a captive portal to require users to accept a use policy before connecting.

Question 5

Any thoughts on different/best main routers to use for these? I've got a church with a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND V1. I am thinking of getting them a newer, faster router like the ASUS RT-AC68U to go with these UBis.  Also do you turn off wireless on the main router and only use the UBIs, or use can you mix both?

These work well in our private school... however, I believe there is a 100mb/sec limit.  With a lot of devices connected, that 100 mb/sec gets divided/eaten up pretty quickly.  My suggestion is to upgrade to the UniFi PRO version (10/100/1000).  We have a Netgear Nighthawk Router and turned off it's WiFi (although you can use both if you like).

can I have the same SSID on all three of them?

Yes. These are configured with a central management interface. You set up your SSID(s) and as you adopt the AP(s) they take the same SSID(s) that are in your configuration.

Can these items be used outside if under a covered porch?

Accepted Answer

I'd say "maybe".  It all depends on the humidity/temperature range.  If you have dew on your porch in the morning, then I'd say no since that moisture would condense inside the AP and cause problems.  They are not a sealed unit and they're not designed for any exposure to water or condensation.
What I have, personally, is a UAP-outdoor+ mounted outside (just on the side of the building) and one of these (UAP) inside.  Works like a charm.

I would like to know more about the PoE aspect of these devices. Specifically, do I need a PoE capable switch to power them?

They come with PoE injectors, which are adapters that plug into a power source and you connect your data Ethernet to them, and the output cable is an Ethernet cable that goes to the unit. The output cable carries both power and data. 1 adapter per unit.

Can I plug the access points right into the Ethernet ports on my Comcast modem?

The UAP is  a P.O.E. device, and as such you will need to provide power along the Ethernet line.  These devices come with a power injector, so you can use most any ethernet plug.

That being said, if all you have is a modem then you will need a router also.  You will have to connect to the UAP with the provided software and configure it.  These things are great, but not intended for the average home user.

I have observed that Comcast is typically providing a multifunction device with their services.   This device is a modem and wireless router built into one device.  If you have one of these devices then you can use a UAP on one of the ports.

Question 10

Currently I'm running just a standard Netgear wireless router. I'm thinking about extending the range of the network using these devices. I'm wondering if this the right path as well as if these have security built in (WPA2)?

I had Netgear, Linksys, ASUS also.  they all seem to do the Job. I also experiment in having Multiple Access Points because i just want more coverage. Having Multiple Router Access points work ok. After i stubbled on the Ubiquiti Unifi i was hesitant in spending that much. But i did for my Home. And and have never looked back. I love these things, No more Kids, Daddy Internet is Down or Wifi. Just an FYI. im only using the 2.4 Ghz Band. I have only 2 deployed in a 3000sq home. I have to tell you these things just work. I do some Network stuff for my clients homes, and always here about Wifi drops. After i recommend this and set it up for them They don't call me anymore :-). The only thing i noticed is that what ever computer you set this up on . that's the only computer you can use to access it even thought you download and installed on a different PC. If you want to have access on multiple computers u would have to set it up on one PC. Download the File, and then install that file into another machine in which the AP's will be able to access form any Machine. I completely turn off all 5Ghz. it seems to cause more trouble and disturbance then do Good.
