Does this include a power supply? My router does not have POE.

Accepted Answer

Yes, the unit includes a power injector. If you don't know what that is, the power injector is a separate device that plugs into an AC outlet for power and then supplies power to the access point via Ethernet.

Normal Switch -> Ethernet Cable 1 -> Power Injector -> Ethernet Cable 2 -> Access Point.

The power injector sits inline between your normal switch and the access point. It has a separate plug for power.

Question 2

If you have several of these, can they all be programmed for the same SSID?

Absolutely. The clients freely roam and will attach automatically to the strongest AP. Great at hotel deployments!

Can this model be added to an exiting wireless network without an ethernet connection?

Accepted Answer

At this current time I don't believe the Ubiquiti UniFi access points can be used as wireless range extenders if that is what you mean.  Each access point does require a single ethernet connection back to the access switch or router to connect to the rest of the network and internet.  Power is sent across this single ethernet, though, via either a PoE capable switch (Ubiquiti has several great options here as well) or the included PoE injector.

Question 4

I am trying to use this device with a TP-Link 8-port PoE gigabit switch.  It will not function when plugged into one of the PoE ports.  Is it not compatible with standard PoE devices?

Ubiquity devices use either PASSIVE 24v PoE or ACTIVE 48v PoE. You must insure that your switch and the device match. This unit (UAP access point) needs 24v PASSIVE PoE (as provided by the included power supply), but NOT by most ethernet switches (which provide 48v ACTIVE PoE).

How many ports for different users are in this WAP?

Not quite sure I understand your question but I will attempt to answer it best I can. There is only a single port on the unit for RJ-45 Ethernet. It is powered by the included POE adapter. You can setup multiple SSIDs using the free software controller including a guest network that could support multiple users using the same AP but different SSIDs.

Question 6

The software that comes with the AP references "Cloud Based" controller.  I would love to be able to install the controller application to my existing utility server.  Can I run the controller locally.  Or does it require connection to a cloud based resource?

Yes it can be run on a stand-alone basis. It does in fact run locally. There is just a service that allows the system to connect to a cloud-based management console that then passes commands on to the local server, but that requires a subscription and is totally optional.

I am running a MAC comp to use this on. is this compatible with OS X?

Installed with no problem on my 2013 Mac Pro running OSX 10.8.5

You will need to change security preferences temporarily to allow installs from unidentified developers in order to install the UniFi controller.

I found the rest of setup easy enough assuming you have moderate technical savvy.

Question 8

Does this have 802.11ac like it says in the description? It doesn't show it on the manufacturers product page.

This model does not have wireless AC. Ubiquiti does have an AC access point however. The easiest way to tell is that the AC model is square in shape. The wireless N models (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) are round.

I assume this gets connected via an input hard-wired cat5. Is there at least one output cat 5 connection so I can hard-wire my ps3 to it? Thanks

There is only one Ethernet port on this device.  There is no built-in switching feature.

In the description of this product it mentions a connection to a server. Can I use this to extend the wireless network within my home with a normal wireless router?

Yes you can.  It will get a DHCP address and then act as a bridge to any wireless clients that connect to it.
