Question 1

This says the mouse works with Windows 2000. Well, I have an old computer with Windows 98, and I need to retrieve some data from it. My mouse doesn't work. Will this one fill the bill? Please don't laugh, but my data are in Word Star, an MS-DOS business program. My dissertation is in this program and I shouldn't have let it stay there for 23 years!  Thanks.

Contrary to what Tom says, this mouse does not need any driver to work. It is a standard PS/2 mouse.

To determine if this mouse will work for you, examine the back of your desktop. You are looking to verify that it has an available "PS/2" port. This port is circular, about 1cm in diameter, and teal in color. It will be next to many other ports, so take care to examine each closely for the one described above.

Additionally, you can google search "PS/2 port" to see what they typically look like.

Yes it was new and it will work with Windows 7, your motherboard needs to have an PS/2 mouse port. Some newer motherboards have a single PS/2 port which can be used for either a mouse or keyboard but not both at the same time.

I got mine out of the box just for you.  My mouse cord is at least 5 and a half (5.5) feet long.

I don't recommend getting this mouse.  The mouse wheel is horrendously overstiff.  If you use this as your every day mouse you are guaranteed to get tenondits or RSI or RSD or some other terrible hand problem at some point in the future (should take a few years).

I put mine back in the box and wrote a great big warning on it "OMG! OVERSTIFF MOUSEWHEEL" so I can't return it.  I am keeping it to forever remind me not to buy another one of these.

I bought every single 1000 DPI PS/2 lasermouse from NewEgg (that doesn't have silly LED lights on it) and the best one is the Adesso HC 3003PS.

I will try to come back and write a review of every single PS/2 mouse sometime later.
