Question 1

How deep is the well for the docking bay? That is to say how far does a 3.5 hard drive rest inside the dock vs. how much sticks out. I have a BlacX connected via eSata, and the hard drive sits in only about 1 1/2" and the hole it's self is to big and does not support the drives very well, in my opinion. I find the eSata unreliable at time so I'm hoping the USB 3 will be a little more consistent, and better hold the drive. Thanks

I just took this out of the box yesterday. 2 inches of the drive rests in the dock. 3.75 inches sticks up out of the dock. The hole is just big enough to fit the drive. When in place, the drive has nominal movement and rests in place quite firmly, until you push down on the eject button to push it up and out. One thing that suprised me was how light weight the dock is, being mostly plastic. Not really a problem since once the drive is in it, it's all heavy enough to stay in place. Just lighter than my Rosewill dock. I do like the power button on the front. I'm happy with it!

IS unit compatible with windows 8.1?

I'm not sure, when I purchased it I used it for some old Windows 7 hard drives I had, never could get them to copy.
