Will this work with a laptop hard drive?

Laptop HDs mostly are 2.5" (width). This device works with both desktop (size 3.5") and 2.5" hard drives. Note to slot on top. That cover opens up when a full size hard drive is inserted, while the smaller 2.5" hard drive just goes through the open slot.

I assume this will work with USB 2 as well as 3 although slower...?

Yep, works fine with my 2.0 slots

Can i use a hard drive WD15ears from Western digital in this dock ?

Yes,but be aware if you use a usb2 connection and a drive that large, data transfers (depending on what you are doing) can take many hours....I have never had a problem of any kind with this dock and it is very fast on usb3. If you are patient, it just always works! It IS a little bulky (large) for what it does.
