The model I purchased, for a few dollars less than $274, is the A1, not A1B.  Mine is not smart, and I recently read an article negative on "smart" units, saying the smarter move is to buy an external media device, like Roku or Apple TV.  I'll be buying an Apple TV, if the new model has more available content.

Refurbished products are generally factory returns, so in a sense they are used.  That said, mine came in the original factory wrap, so who knows - perhaps it was a return that no one opened.
