Question 1

Am I correct in my understanding that this unit connects to a non-wireless enabled TV through HDMI and then it is this unit that can be accessed through the wireless network in the house to playback video from a PC?

Close.  It does have HDMI, but it has some kind of direct wireless connection.  It doesn't really work through your wireless network.  You plug a transmitter into your USB and install some software that transmits.  Overall, I'm satisfied - but the range for transmission isn't really very far.  Hope this helps.

will I be able to use a wifi remote keyboard to operate the computer while I'm watching the pc on the flat screen tv?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't see why not.  It generates its own direct line of sight signal and is not effected by your WiFi router/signal.

would I be able to use a usb cable so I could put the transmitter higher in the room to clear obstacles like furniture I would only need about 30 inch long cable?

I run mine off a sub extension to get it closer to the receiver.  Closer is better.

Will this work with a Promethean display?

As long as the display accepts hdmi it should work.

Would I be able to use 4 or 5 of these within close proximity of each other? I would like to extend my display on my PC to 4 or 5 monitors wirelessly so that I have 5 or 6 screens total to work with. I can do this with USB display adapters, but would rather use wireless. To confirm, I do not want to mirror, but to extend my PC display.

I couldn't get this to work on any television except a 19" Samsung .... I tried at a business office and could not get any channel to work - it is supposed to automatically find a (wireless) channel to connect. 
(Now I have a very slightly used one still in the box on a shelf!)
