Is this compatible with the hard drive from a Dell Dimension 8400 as well as a Toshiba and Samsung  laptop?

Yes. It is compatible.  As long as the drives are SATA, which they all should be, then it's plug and play.  The drives will come up as external drives.

Question 5

Purchased a new system in which all of its sata slots are being used.   I have a couple 2.5 hd's from the old system that have data on them I would like to transfer to the new hd's.   Would this do the trick?   Really rather not unhook something currently in the system, add the old parts, transfer and then fix it back.   Once the data is transferred, can it be used to wipe the drive and format it?   Thanks for your time.

I have been able to do the following just as if the drive was installed through one of the SATA ports in the computer: read data,write data, clone a new drive, wipe a drive, format and partition a drive. It is just slower than through a SATA port. I used both Windows 10 and MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

Can this docking station fits two desktops 3.5 hdds at the same times?Or It can only fits a laptop 2.5 hdd and 3.5 desktop hdd together only.The fitting bay can fits two 3.5 Hdds at the same times with no problems?

There is only 1 SATA connection in the dock so it can only connect 1 drive at a  time

Any reason this can't be plugged into a USB router and used as a network backup? I've been doing this with the smaller external WD drives without any issues (other than speed).

Short answer: Unanswerable with the limited information, and only a customer with both your exact model router and this exact device could answer.

Instead of guessing, I can point you in the right direction. The best way to find out is to contact the manufacturer of your router. You asked about a USB router and I assume you mean a router that has a USB port for adding NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices. Some routers are only compatible with a limited number of USB devices.

I have the Wavlink device and it works fine on my computers as backup/storage. I have not tried it on my router which would not help if I did try it as my routers are pretty high end. I have about 20 TB of Hard drives I accumulate as I replace HDs on my systems with SSDs.

I actually only use and recommend Thermaltake drive docks as they have been the most reliable on the most devices. Never had one fail and even my picky system sees it and is backed up on it.

For the price, it is worth trying. Know how to initialize bare drives if you plan to use it with new drives purchased as  "Bare" drives. So many folks return drives because they did not know how to initialize a new drive. Links not allowed here - just search for initializing hard drive.

Does this drive mount work well with linux?

This worked on my Ubuntu 14.04 system.  I am using it now on by Dish Network TV as a dvr recorder and it works fine.  I just needed to change the wire as the Dish Network will not work with USB 3. I have been using it for about three months with not trouble.
