I haven't tried connecting it to my router yet but it does go to sleep with a slow flashing white light while connected to my computer. Safe bet it would do the same with the router when not in use.

Yes, this is a very noisy external hard drive. NOT SSD. It doesn't matter what you have it plugged into, it takes a sec to a few seconds for it to spin up and read the hard drive. Bear in mind, even though it states 20 gig, windows reads only 18 gigs of it. Waiting to read from this hard drive is the most frustrating.
