It will fit in any NVMe slot that accepts a 4TB 2280 NVMe. Ask MSI

Will this drive work at all in a laptop which does not have a heat sink?

The stupidity of these questions never ceases to amaze me. NVME drives are intended to run at a high operating temperature and most don't have heatsinks. If your laptop already has an NVME drive it will be fine. If it doesn't use a hammer and chisel to adapt it.

Yes, these types of SSD have Dram.

What heatsink would work best with the 4TB version?

Many motherboards already come with a basic thermal strip on the bottom of the parts you remove to install an M.2.

Will it also work with PCIe 3?

Yes, new PCIe standards are designed to be backwards compatible with older standards. You can use any PCIe 4 or 5 card in a PCIe 3 slot

Does this support or is it compatible with the upcoming directstorage api?

according to the datasheet (available on western digitals website) it is direct storage compatible.
