What kind of NAND chips does this drive use?

According to the spec it is 3D NAND.

Does this Western Digital WD BLACK SN850 NVMe M.2 2280 drive require an external heat sink or will it run cool enough without one?

I believe you can get away without an external heat sink if you just do light duty things such as E-mails, surf the Internet, pay bills...etc. If you copy massive data, say 10 GB+ it is a good idea to have heat sinks to prevent thermal throttling. Heat sinks are just USD $8-$30 in general, just a small fraction the price of this drive. I'll definitely recommend using heat sinks for any kind of M.2 NVMe SSD, particularly for PCIe 4.0 drives like this WD SN 850.
