The acer can definitely use this drive. Looked up that compaq model number and it looks to be an older computer, I really doubt that unit has SATA ports. So definitely on the acer, would say no to the compaq. Hope this helps :)

Yes, this drive can be used anywhere you have IDE drives. IDE drives use wide, flat, grey cables. The drive will have to be partishioned and formated.  I use a Windows XP install CD that automaticly does that.

I feel confident in saying these days most laptops do not use these 3.5" drives.
