Is this a NEW drive?

NO, a USED HD (no real way to prove any of this)  because

the Reseller "wipes" the SMART Data;  the one I received has a Label Manuf Date of 20APR2015, so NO  WD Support, still an Extremely Reliable HD, and you take your chances if will get a 1K, 5K or 10K more hours of use. So figure out if this HD has been used 24x7x300 hours/year * Years ...  of many hours of Spin Time?

Even I had "Buyer's REMORSE after receiving the WD 10K HD - I have identical WD Manuf 2012, and working very well .. I bought (2) of them, and both are OK

I probably ought to have bought a "New WD 10K" rarely available, and very, very costly, still, very Reliable

Question 2

Is this drive one of those that will fit in most standard laptops?  Or is it one of those uber thick drives that would stick out the bottom?

My laptop is an Asus G74SX, if someone can check to see if it would fit.  From the picture, it looks thick but pictures can be deceiving.

It is thick and more importantly, it needs 5v AND 12v.
Most laptops do not supply12v to the HDisks.

I want to buy 4 and use them in my QSNP NAS unit (TS-431P)  will I need the icepack to use it?

I run mine in a SuperMicro case. As long as you make sure the drives have active fans on them and are set for spin down, you will be good for daily use. Watch them carefully during the initial setup if you are going to transfer a lot to them.

will this fit in my MacBook Pro A1297 ?

More than likely no. They are very thick.  Also these drives need 12 volts. Most laptops only provide 5 volts.  Think of is as a desktop drive.

I know this particular drive comes in a 2.5 form factor, and I have read that a number of people use this without the "ice pack". I also understand due to it's thickness, it will not fit inside a laptop. Will this fit in a 2.5 inch cage in a case, like where you would typically put an SSD?

It depends on the size of the cage. If you ask a question about your end goal that would be better. This drive requires both 12 and 5 volt supplies so it won't work in most laptops. I use them in HP DL380 G5/6/7 cages all the time.

will it work in a Alienware 14 laptop?

You need to call Alienware and ask if they support 12 volt hardisks. Most laptop only support 5 volt hardisks.  
This drive needs a 12  volt supply.

Don't believe it will, most laptop HD's are approx. 9.5mm in height this is 15mm height and made for servers.

Does this work in a MacBook Pro 17" 2010?

No, it will not work IN a MacBook Pro. While it says it is a 2.5" HD, it is actually a little bigger and will not fit in the MacBook Pro's. Or any macbook for that matter. I bought it with the same intent only to find it would not fit. :(

Question 9

first off does this come in the heat sink because i see ppl complementing how the heat sink keeps things cool yet this model is not supposed to come in a heatsink so it can fit the 2.5 form factor. second how much heat does this generate without the heat sink?

No, there is no heat sink with this drive.

I have two of these drives sitting next to each other in a hot swap 5.25 bay running at 41c each.  The hot swap bay came with tiny fans for cooling, which is minimal.  The machine sits in a datacenter that's always on and the CPU runs at 33c.  For reference, the boot SSD runs at 29c.  I'll safely say these do run warm, but they do not run hot.

I LOVE these drives and will be getting more.

Question 10

Can anyone suggest a mounting bracket for this drive or will any 2.5 to 3.5 or 2.5/3.5 to 5.25 bracket will work?

As of now, I am not sure which slot I am putting the drive in.

You should not be using a mounting bracket.  If you are, you're using it in an environment for which it was not designed and should consider your warranty voided; you should be using a DHTZ instead.
