By Samsung I guess. I didn't see any indication it came from a carrier and it works in Europe too. Confirmed with my trip to Hungary, Netherlands, Croatia etc...

Yes, it is not locked to a carrier from the factory, which is as it says in the title.  No, I have not tried it on any carrier besides at&t.  No it is not rooted, which is different from unlocked, but some people confuse the two.

It can. I'm using it on T-Mobile. No issues. One thing though if you're upgrading from dumb phone that uses a regular SIM card -- this uses a microSIM card. You'll either have to go to T-Mobile shop and get one (~US$20) or get a SIM card cutter.

Is this a GSM phone, i.e. it works only with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint?

I bought one for use in Ecuador, and yes, it is unlocked and I use it with Claro , the company here.   No problems at all. They use GSM here.

Is this a true unlocked international GSM quad-band that will work on ANY GSM network, anywhere in the world?  I want to be able to use it in both Europe [Hungary, Croatia, Russia, Belgium] as well as the U.S.

I bought this phone for my wife. It came with a Polish instruction guide and set for the T-Mobile network. We started it out on AT&T in the US and switched it over to Straight Talk without any issues. That's all my experience with changing networks on this phone. Hope it helps.

But i am not sure what data band it will work.
It depends if you buy att or tmobile sim from straight talk.

nope, according to metro pcs website, they dont support it. However, I did some searching on the internet and found out that metro pcs now uses the GSM network, because they merged with t-mobile. If that is the case, this phone MIGHT actually work with metro pcs. If i were you, i'd go to a metro pcs store, and ask if their network supports Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500
