1. What is the chipset used in this dock? 2. Does XIGMATEK provide firmware updates to customers?

1) I can't speak to the chipset used in the dock (I haven't opened it up and it's not listed on their website). 2) For this particular dock, there have been two firmware updates posted on their website for the product (Xigmatek > Products > Accessories > Storage > Secure III > Download). They don't have any other current storage offerings, but previous devices also had firmware updates posted for them. I can't speak to the ease of upgrading the dock, but it gives me a lot of confidence in Xigmatek that they continue to support their hardware and provide fixes/enhancements.

The specs list a "3TB" limit for some reason. Kind of an odd number. Usually there would either be a partitioning/addressing problem at 2TB, or it would work with 4TB, 6TB whatever. Anyone know if there really is a 3TB limit?

It's 3TB and above. I manually updated firmware because mine was old and could not recognize 3TB HDD. After that, all my 3TB drives works great. I don't have the 4TB HDD but I remember I saw some user review said 4TB worked well.
