Do I need to buy a separate monitor or can i plug it in to a mac for viewing?

For configuration of the DVR, you will be just able to use the vga port. HDMI is not working. I tried connecting it to our TV thru HDMI but can't get any display. I would suggest that you research more on other products. I should've bought a Swann 720p, or better yet a 1080p system. Lorex or Qsee might be better than this Zmodo system.

What is the maximum length you can use on this camera with cat 5e?

No there is no option to change the color of the camera

If I purchase a unit without the harddrive, can a external drive be added? What are the storage options?

In researching this system on the Zmodo site, I learned that they recommend specific HDDs for the NVR - not just any old $40/TB drive. The recommended drives cost in the $70-90 range, so ultimately I chose to buy the unit complete with TB drive.

What are the physical dimensions of the cameras (with the mounts installed)?

The mounts can go on the top, in back or beneath the camera. The camera itself is about 5 inches long and about 3.5 inches wide. Its a great but for our needs. We use them outside and the night vision work flawlessly. Be sure to turn off outside lights.
