will this work in a HP Pavilion p6310y?
any recommendations to make the pc more gaming friendly? power supply, ram, etc.

It should work as long as your PCI X16 slot is free and you don't add too much power consuming devices.  Mine is installed in a Dell Optiplex 960 with a 255W power supply.  The card calls for a minimum of 300W.  I'm only using this computer as a TV tuner DVR for the most part and the Zotac is working just fine.

Does this card pass audio through HDMI without the need of a SPDIF header on the motherboard?

Yes ,I have one in my front room attached to my 65" HDTV for playing games on and the sound is through the HDMI cable  plugged into the GT 730. Nothing else is required.

Will it work with XP?

I don't think it matters what operating system you use. (unless its like windows 3.1 or something) The only problem I had with installing the card was forcing my motherboard to recognize the card, my computer guy said it had something to do with a security protocol or something. 20 bucks to have them install the card was well worth it. My main concern with this card was the fact that it has NO active cooling on the card itself. However this has not been a problem at all. This was a great card at the price I paid.

I have an Asus P5N-E-SLi with windows 7.Will it work? Old Gforce card gone bad, fan quit. Just need  basic anything , no gaming.

Will work fine with windows 7. Good basic card for general computing. Nice thing is it has no fan to go out. I have used several of these in office environment.

I have two monitors.  Will this run the HDMI and DVI at the same time?

It's been a while since I ran two monitors on it, but I'm 99% sure that I was using both the HDMI and DVI at the same time.

What does it mean when it says x8 lanes?

Basically a PCIe X16 slot has 16 lanes to the cpu.  If a graphics card says it has 8 lanes then it will only use half of those lanes.  A higher end card will have more lanes.  You may need 16 or even 2 cards to produce 32 lanes for intense gaming.  For standard video and DVR applications this card is fine.

Question 7

It looks like this card will have its own sound card/chip onboard.  I know from other answers that it has sound on the HDMI port (which I would use for a monitor that is HDMI-only).  But I also want to connect a TV with a DVI to HDMI cable.  So does digital sound come out the DVI port too?  (On my existing, ancient Zotac 9500GT card, it does).  Any problems with sound under Linux?  Thanks!

This card does NOT have its own sound, nor does any video card that I am aware of.  The HDMI will pass sound, but only if your computer has a sound card/chip and then only if properly configured.  I use a similar GT 730 in my HTPC that runs Windows Media Center.  It was pretty easy to configure Windows to use the HDMI output for sound, but I don't have any experience doing this in Linux.  With regard to sound over the DVI, I can't help you but I don't think this card supports it.  I have a 4 GB version and I don't recall seeing an option to transmit the audio through that connector when I set it up in my HTPC.
