I can explain a little bit more about what's going on. So when the card is idling in power state 8 (lowest power), it's core clock sits around 324 MHz and memory is also deeply downclocked. Should the card stay in this state with the computer idle, the fans will be stationary and the temperature should not go anywhere near 65 C at which point the fans will rev up.

However, I've noticed that when left idle for a while, the card invariably kicks into Power State 0 (highest power) and gets stuck there at 1771 MHz core/5400 MHz mem. In this state, even though the card is idle, the power consumption is still high enough to push the card above 65 C. So the fans will rev up, cool the card down pretty quickly and go off in a few seconds. The card then heats up again, triggering the revving and stopping cacophony.

I've tried the old Maxwell tricks of forcing P8 but unfortunately that no longer works with Pascal. My current workaround is to fix the fan using MSI Afterburner at perhaps 33% (going under risks the fan stalling every now and then, leading to revving/stopping again; going higher makes the fan too loud for me to sleep with PC in the bedroom).

Of course I use a custom fan curve via Afterburner when I don't need the quiet.

Which card will provide faster performance once *manually* overclocked: GTX 1080 AMP Extreme or the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW Hybrid? Having trouble deciding. Thanks!

Hybrid has a chance of keeping the temps under 50 C, which will allow higher boost clocks. My AMP Extreme usually stays around high 50's when in use. As the temperature rises from 40's to 60, there are clear step-downs in clocks. Not a significant amount of difference to be fair. Also my card can't take any amount of manual overclock :(

there isn't a single displayport 1.4 cable that can be used for this card, nor is there a monitor that supports that speed either. instead can i use a displayport 1.3 cable thats backwards compatible with 1.2? my monitor can read dp 1.2 only

can you remove the back plate?. i just really dont like the big yellow stripe and would like to paint the back plate like black or somthing.

I believe you can but remember all the components and fans are designed with size for this plate, make sure you can find another way like painting it different color. Coz in my case I don't see the yellow color eve though I don't like the color too but everything is red in my case and I also turned rgb lights red so I don't see its natural color.
