Yes, the case is metal. Make sure to upgrade the firmware. It kept resetting itself to the default settings before the upgrade.

How would I connect this to a ZyXel PK5001Z modem/router?

Connect it to any of the 4 ports and it will act as a layer 2 extension of those ports. You can create point to point interfaces if you can but keeping it later 2 is easiest.

Does this switch show the CRC errors?
